Walking. Most of us do it every single day, without even realizing it. But did you know that you could walk upwards of a mile or more per day just from walking around the house, working, running errands and walking to and from your car? Did you also know that walking is one of the most basic forms of taking care of your body and health? Need to make a change but don’t know where to start on your journey to better health? Walk.
“Walk to be healthy, walk to be happy” – Charles Dickens
Taking control of your fitness and health can be incredibly easy. Drink your water, eat your veggies, watch your portions, get enough sleep and move your body a little bit everyday. Keep it simple, stupid! Taking yourself on a walk can be one of the easiest ways to move your body… and the effects it can have on both your body and mind are rewarding.
Choose Your Own Adventure
Walking can be leisurely or even difficult; depending on the intensity, distance, duration and frequency you choose to walk. You can seriously turn up the health benefits of walking by just changing up your terrain to add in some hills or unpaved trails, adding some resistance by means of adding a weighted vest or ruck sack, picking up the pace by walking faster and even challenge your friends to step challenges (if you use a fitness tracker or smart watch). Enjoy the fresh air while you move. Get a friend to walk with you or bring your dog (or cat, if you roll like that)!
Reap the Benefits!
While walking can be enjoyable, walking can also be incredibly beneficial to your health. Walking not only helps maintain your physical fitness, but it can be excellent for your mental health, reduce your risk of chronic disease, help you sleep better and maybe even make your other goals seem more obtainable. It’s also pretty cool that you can just get up anywhere and walk if you feel like it. Its relatively easy for most people to do and that’s what makes it such an awesome form of exercise to get back in a fitness routine or to start from square one.
Fitness You CAN Afford
If you’re looking for a way to get in shape and feel better, but not break the bank – then walking is right up your alley. Walking costs literally nothing. You can spend money on some good shoes (but don’t forget to be fitted properly at a running shop!), or you can even walk barefoot! The possibilities are endless. If you choose to walk at night or early in the morning before the sun rises, you may want to invest in some reflective gear *aff link* or gear that illuminates *aff link* for your own safety. I’ve never been hit by a car, but I can imagine it’s probably not super fun.
If you are physically capable, you have zero excuses to not walk. Change it up every day: visit a new spot to walk, try a barefoot walk or take a walk on a rainy day. You owe it to yourself and your health. What are you waiting for??
Get up and move!
YES! Cory and I take the gang of dogs on walks allllllll the time. It’s one of our favorite things to do together.
